Geauga County Safety Center Overview

The Geauga County Safety Center is the only detention facility verified in the facility map. It is a full-service county jail operated by the Geauga County Sheriff's Office in Chardon. It holds pretrial detainees, people sentenced by Chardon Municipal Court or Geauga County Common Pleas Court, court-order violators, work-release and community-service inmates, immigration detainees, and people held for outside agencies.

The facility opened to inmates on December 28, 2005, when 47 inmates moved from the former linear jail at 13281 Ravenna Road to the Merritt Road Safety Center. That history is useful for old references, but current jail business uses the Merritt Road address. The sheriff identifies the active Safety Center as the place for visitation, mail, commissary, phone, medical, PREA, and Corrections contact.

The Safety Center name should be used in current custody copy because it is the official facility name in the sheriff materials. The mail format still uses "C/O Geauga County Jail" at the Merritt Road address. Those two labels point to the same active local detention facility, not to a separate jail building.

Safety Center Capacity Population

The sheriff publishes a rated capacity of 182 beds. The bed split is 38 female beds, 84 general-population male beds, and 60 male Community Service or Work Release beds. In 2024, the Safety Center received and processed 2,087 prisoners. That count included local new charges, court-order violations, local sentences, immigration detainees, outside-county inmates, and arraignments.

The Geauga County Safety Center population is broader than recent local arrests. The sheriff's 2024 processing count included 1,560 local new-charge, court-order-violation, and municipal or Common Pleas sentence cases; 319 immigration detainees; 37 Cuyahoga County inmates; 16 Ashtabula County inmates; 10 Mayfield inmates; one Hunting Valley inmate; 11 other-agency holds; and 133 arraignments.

Visit Geauga County Safety Center

Geauga County uses video visitation through CPC kiosks and InmateSales scheduling. Remote visits can be completed by smartphone or computer. On-site video visits use the lobby video station while the inmate connects from a housing-unit kiosk. All visits are recorded and monitored, and the sheriff may deny, cancel, or terminate visits for misconduct or facility emergencies.

Safety Center Mail Money

Mail must be addressed to the inmate's full name, C/O Geauga County Jail, 12450 Merritt Road, Chardon, Ohio 44024-0224. Letters are received Monday through Saturday excluding holidays, must have a complete return address, must be 8.5 by 11 inches, cannot be thicker than standard paper, and are limited to five pages. Cards, glitter, glue, lipstick, perfume, stickers, labels, tape, packages, reading material, envelopes, stamps, cash, checks, and unknown items are prohibited.

Safety Center Booking Intake

A standard local arrest moves through transport to the Safety Center, intake search, identity collection, property handling, medical and mental-health screening, booking record creation, classification, phone access, and court or bond processing. The official medical section says inmates receive routine health care and emergency care. Sick call is conducted five days a week by medical staff, including a physician and registered nurses.

Mental-health services are locally specific. Ravenwood Mental Health Center provides crisis intervention for mental-health emergencies, and a Ravenwood psychiatrist evaluates referred inmates bi-weekly. Dental care is available through On Site Dental, Inc., and serious emergencies can result in transfer to University Hospitals Geauga Regional Hospital.

Safety Center Programs Conditions

The sheriff publishes separate jail programs and chaplain program pages, and the facility has 60 male beds assigned to Community Service or Work Release. PREA reporting is also documented. The sheriff states a zero-tolerance standard for sexual abuse and sexual harassment and applies it to personnel, volunteers, interns, and contract personnel with inmate contact.

Inmates can report PREA concerns verbally, in writing through request form or kite, or by letter to the Sheriff at the Merritt Road address. Non-inmates and third parties can call (440) 279-2009 ext. 4411 and ask for the supervisor on duty, or use the outside hotline at (440) 286-8074.

The medical section adds concrete conditions context. Sick call runs five days a week through jail medical staff, and the facility lists physician and registered-nurse involvement.
